Can i put a automatic transmission from 1985 Chevy pickup in 1970 Chevy pickup with manual transmission?
The 1985 pickup is a Chevy 3/4 ton pickup, and the the 1970 pickup is half ton. If i do put the automatic transmission in the 1970 would i have to also put the steering columns in from the 1985 pickup? Both pickups have small block 350s. and i also want to swap them out so will the holes to mount the engine line up?
Yes you can. It will take a lot of work to rebuild the engine to work with the automatic transmission and rebuild the steering console to make it automatic.

What is so bad about an automatic transmission?
Why do they get talked down so much when it comes to racing? I can maybe see if you are going to race a small car or something, because you would get more power out of it, since small cars are made for economy mainly. But, if you ask me when it comes to sport/muscle cars, it doesn't matter if it's an automatic or five speed. They are still fast. What do you think the pros of an automatic transmission are for racing?
There are many types of automatics - the one that is generally shunned in racing is the planatary gear torque converter automatic that most of us have driven. Automatic manuals (manual gearboxes that shift automatically) are preferred for most racing applications.
There are also many types of racing. The transmission needs for a top fuel dragster are very different than a F1 car.
Given all that, traditional automatics tend to be heavier (bad), un-locked torque converters eat up power (bad), an automatic may not put you in an optimum gear for every track situation, and under extreme and persistent loads automatics are more prone to fail than a manual.
