The engine is running modified camshafts, the cams on this particular engine are designed to work best at higher rpm's. At low revs i.e. idle the overlap etc on the cams is inefficient and hence sounds a little off.

The idle speed is set low and the timing is advanced. That's what makes it haul ass.
