typically in production cars it is because they build a rear end that just suits the maximum needs, just happens that the trend is usually about 15% loss of hp due to inefficiency...but you are right, a 1000 hp car may lose 20 hp to power the rear end, but most likely the rear end will fail cuz its not thick enough etc

I hope you don't mean the loss is a percentage of the flywheel horsepower. If it takes 20 hp to spin the drive line 30mph then it will always take 20hp to spin it at 30mph whether the engine make 25hp or a million horsepower. You are right that the drivetrain loss is proportional to the speed of the drivetrain, but it's not a fixed percentage of the power of then engine.
yea the Zr1 has more torque at idle than the GTR's highest torque output.. lol
this video 549 hp include the power train friction..........in the factory the car is tested without a flywheel

looked like at least 450 lb ft at the wheels at 1000 rmp. that's higher than the gtr output. lol

You shouldn't assign a real number to drivetrain loss. It will always be a percentage, and is proportional to RPM and frictional losses and temperature of all involved components.
just what rodneyrick said, a manual transmission car looses about 50-80 horsepower because the motor has to turn the transmission, driveshaft, and differential, or in the zr1's case the motor is turning the torque tube, and transaxle. Turning all that mass takes horsepower away from the engine itself, so 638 at the motor subtract 80=558 or so at the wheels

638 to the fly wheel - 549 to the wheels,factoring the 15 - 20% loss in the drivetrain,that sounds about right.
front back hell even if it had side wheel horsepower it still takes a back seat to the zr1...... gtr couldnt even handle the c6Z.
